Where to Hand Ayat ul Kursi at Home

Ayatul Kursi is almost certainly the most-hung verse in Muslim homes. In Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ calls it the greatest verse in the Quran. It is verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah, a single, unbroken description of Allah: the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all, whom "neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes." A verse like that deserves a considered place.

First, the etiquette

Scholars hold a range of views on hanging Quranic verses, and it's worth asking someone you trust about your own practice. Many permit it as a reminder and a beautiful presence in the home, provided it's treated with respect. In practice, that respect comes down to a few things most families already sense:

  • Never at floor level, or anywhere it will be stepped over, sat against, or covered with coats and bags.
  • Keep it clean and whole. Steam, grease and harsh direct sun all damage art over time.
  • Hang it for remembrance, not as a charm. The verse's value lies in what it says and in reciting it, not in the object on the wall.
  • Never in a bathroom, or on a wall shared with the toilet area.

None of this limits good design. If anything, it steers the verse toward the places where it looks best.

The entryway

The most common choice, and a good one. Many people recite Ayatul Kursi as they leave home, so a verse by the door becomes part of a daily rhythm.

Hang it on the wall that faces you as you walk in, or beside the door at eye level (center at 57 to 60 inches). Above a 48-inch console, a 36 × 24 is right. Where the entry has an open shoe rack, many families prefer a different wall, or at least a clear three feet between shoes and verse.

The living room

Ayatul Kursi is long. At small sizes the words blur into texture, and nobody across the room can read them. The living room is where the verse can have scale: 54 × 36 above a standard 84-inch sofa, or 72 × 46 above a sectional. At that size it becomes the architecture of the room.

The bedroom

Reciting Ayatul Kursi before sleep is a Sunnah many grew up with. Placing it above the bed makes that connection visible. Hang it above the headboard, bottom edge 6 to 10 inches up, never on the wall at the foot of the bed where feet would point toward it. A 54 × 36 suits a king bed; on a queen, choose 36 × 24.

The study or home office

A quieter placement, and a lovely one: the wall you look up at between tasks. Keep it to the side of the desk rather than directly behind the screen, so it's something you notice rather than something you stare past.

Where not to hang it

  • Above the stove or kettle. Not a question of respect, just physics: steam and grease dull any finish.
  • Behind a door that swings open and hides it half the day.
  • The wall faced in prayer. Keep that wall calm and hang the verse to the side or behind. (Thursday's Journal post explains why.)
  • Kids' rooms at kid height. Above five feet, out of reach of sticky hands and flying toys.

Read or felt: choosing the look

There's a real choice here. Kufic script, with its bold, square geometry, turns the verse into a pattern first and text second; it reads as a statement from across the room. Flowing script in a tone-on-tone finish is quieter: the letters appear as light moves across them.

In an entryway, lean toward legible. In a bedroom, tone-on-tone almost always wins. It's the difference between a verse that greets you and one that keeps you company.

The Monochrome Ayat ul Kursi comes in 36 × 24, 54 × 36 and 72 × 46, in Beige, Pearl White, Charcoal Black, Silver and Gold, with custom sizes made to order. The Kufic version comes in square sizes from 24 to 48 inches. Whichever wall you choose, choose it on purpose.
