How to hang Islamic Wall Art - Size Guide

Ask an interior designer why a living room feels unfinished, and the answer often comes before they've looked properly. The calligraphy is too small, and it's hung too high. It floats on a big wall like a postage stamp on an envelope.

The fix isn't taste. It's arithmetic. Save this page: these are the numbers that work on almost every wall.

Rule 1: Size the art to the furniture, not the wall

Art above furniture should span about two-thirds of that furniture's width. Anywhere from 60 to 75 percent looks deliberate. Under half looks lost.

Here's how that works with standard furniture, and which Zyra pieces fit (all sizes in inches, width × height):

Above Typical width Aim for Zyra pieces that fit
Large sofa or sectional 96–110 64–75 wide Ayat ul Kursi at 72 × 46; Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq or Al-Kafirun at 72 × 48; Asma-ul-Husna at 72 × 36
Standard sofa 84 54–60 wide Ayat ul Kursi or the Surahs at 54 × 36; Bismillah or Kalima Tayyibah at 60 × 60; Asma-ul-Husna at 60 × 30
Loveseat 60–72 42–50 wide Bismillah or Kalima Tayyibah at 46 × 46; Kufic Ayat ul Kursi at 48 × 48
King bed 76–80 50–56 wide Ayat ul Kursi or the Surahs at 54 × 36
Queen bed 60 40–45 wide Bismillah or Kalima Tayyibah at 46 × 46; the Surahs at 36 × 24
Entry console 36–48 24–36 wide The Surahs at 36 × 24; Bismillah or Kalima Tayyibah at 24 × 24 or 36 × 36
Narrow wall, between windows 24–36 of wall Go tall Qul A'oozu Bi Rabbil-Falaq or Qul Auzo Bi Rabbin Naas at 20 × 45 or 24 × 54
Shelf, desk or nightstand — Small and deep Reflection shadow boxes at 10 × 10, which hang or stand

On a wall with no furniture, like a stair landing or the end of a hallway, go bigger than feels comfortable. A 60 × 60 at the top of a staircase reads beautifully from the floor below.

The same verse at different sizes. Above furniture, the furniture decides.

Rule 2: Hang to the eye, not the ceiling

Galleries hang art so its center sits 57 to 60 inches from the floor, which is average standing eye level. Use that on any open wall.

Above furniture, the furniture sets the height:

  • Sofa: bottom edge 8 to 10 inches above the top of the sofa back.
  • Bed: bottom edge 6 to 10 inches above the headboard.
  • Console or sideboard: bottom edge 6 to 12 inches above the surface. A lamp or vase can overlap the frame slightly; that layering looks intentional.
  • Floor seating (majlis style, floor cushions): drop the center to about 48 inches, where the eye rests when seated on the floor.

High ceilings don't mean higher art. They mean bigger art, hung at the same height.

Rule 3: Match the shape to the words

Calligraphy has a shape before it's hung. Let it guide the wall.

  • Long verses read best horizontally. Ayat ul Kursi and the Surahs need room to flow. Above a sofa or bed, a horizontal line echoes the furniture.
  • Short phrases hold a square. Bismillah and the Kalima Tayyibah are compact and centered, which makes them strong focal points on their own.
  • Tall, narrow walls want a vertical piece. The Qul pieces at 20 × 45 and 24 × 54 were made for the awkward strip of wall beside a door or between two windows. Hung as a pair either side of a bed or a doorway, they frame it like columns.

A tall-format Qul above an entry console: vertical pieces solve narrow walls.

Rule 4: Small pieces need company or a surface

A 10-inch piece alone on a large wall disappears. Small works belong where the eye is already close: a bookshelf, a desk, a nightstand, a niche. The Reflection shadow boxes are 2.25 to 2.5 inches deep, so they can stand on a shelf as easily as they hang.

The nail-height formula

This one has saved many marriages.

Nail height = center height + half the art's height − the distance from the top of the art to the hanger.

Example: a 36 × 36 piece, centered at 57 inches, with its hanging hardware 4 inches below the top edge: 57 + 18 − 4 = 71 inches. Mark 71 inches, and you're done.

For anything 36 inches or larger, hang from two points so it stays level. Use wall anchors rated for at least twice the piece's weight. Very large statement pieces may need two people, or professional installation.

Before you drill: the tape test

Cut kraft paper or painter's tape to the exact size you're considering and tape it to the wall. Live with it for a day. Walk in from the front door, sit on the sofa, look at it at night. Almost everyone who does this sizes up.

Getting the size right is the cheapest way to make a room look designed. Zyra pieces come in a range of sizes, and when a wall needs something in between, custom commissions are made to fit.
